Get Fit For Summer

30-03-2010

Wow - spring is trying to peak around the rainclouds!  Read on to find out more!
The sun comes out - we bare our arms and get out there in the garden in an attempt to having it look all swish for the summer!  Then it rains, we groan - but actually it is a chance to rest our bones and recover before exerting ourselves again.

Perhaps the garden is not your thing - the housework suddenly becomes apparent as the rays of sun shine down on that dust that has been lurking unnoticed in the corner all winter.  We whizz about and clean it up - then take a rest.

And what about all those aches that start to appear as a result of all that exertion.  There are remedies you can have in your kit to keep you fit and active, despite all that possibly unusual labour.  Rhus-t is good "when you don't know how to move in the morning but losen up with movement, just don't sit down - you won't be getting up again".

There are quite a few others.  Arnica being a good all rounder, if you have a specific need, contact Dawn to see what first aid advice will help you.

Cholesterol - If you are worried that all that winter festive food, comfort pies and cakes have affected your health, read on about the dietry changes you can make to help your cholesterol.

Did you know
that the liver manufactures cholesterol. So if you want to lower your cholesterol you need to exercise, stop eating high cholesterol foods and also help the liver make good cholesterol (not bad).

How do I do that ?
Cut out saturated fats - these include red / fatty meat, dairy, sugar, alcohol, fizzy drinks and refined carbs. (So a take away and a pint or a coke is not going to help - best opt for something like a crisp and juicy leafy salad with grilled fish / chicken and perhaps a fresh homemade salsa.)

Eat lots of fibre - this helps clean out the excess cholesterol. So white bread, crisps, snack bars and cakes are not helping - how about whole oat porridge, vegetables and fruits, black eye beans and pulses. Perhaps, for lunch, have hummus and raw vegetables to dip in!

Apples contain pectin. This fibre helps lower cholesterol. So what about the apple a day keeps the Doctor away - lets make it three!

Proven cholesterol lowering foods include olive oil, garlic, onions, apples, fish artichokes, beetroot, carrots, oats, and lentils. Include several of these in your diet each day - even better have some with every meal!

Almonds and walnuts help lower cholesterol - they are best soaked - so chop some up and put it on your breakfast. Or why not try some pecans instead.

Eat those complex carbs - brown rice, millet, buckwheat, oats, quinoa, and barley. Mmmm.. how about porridge for breakfast, brown rice and chicken salad with greens for lunch and quinoa with a bean chilli for supper. Don’t forget the leafy greens as a side dish.

You still need good oils to help raise your good cholesterol, and these come from nature. Oily fish, raw nuts and seeds, cold pressed oils (including olive oil) are needed for a healthy circulation. You can also eat olives as a snack .

Have you tried making mayonnaise from an avocado - avocados also help lower cholesterol. Puree an avocado (or two) with a spring onion, a little cider vinegar and perhaps some lemon juice to taste. Vary the flavour - what about some curry powder or even some garlic!

You can be well and still enjoy your food - let your imagination run wild and play with your food!
