Earlier this year I put in a bid with I Dig Trees for 150 free trees to be planted to support my Home Education Forest School. I was thrilled to be granted the trees.
To support I Dig Trees, and promote their great work (Thank you I Dig Trees), here is the report that I shared back with them (parents all verbally gave their permission to use the photographs - thank you)
I also want to thank all of the parents and children who came out in the mud, and anticipated heavy rain fall, and set the trees, I want to thank the weather for holding off, and allowing us some sunshine at the end of the session, and I want to thank my wonderful husband for helping me set out the markers for yet more trees....

I run a low cost (eg I cover only my costs, not my time) forest school in Brightlingsea, Essex, many of the children are special needs. This is where the trees were set. The aim of the activity is to regenerate the woodland, increase habitat and provide materials for the children to enjoy working with in a few years. Additionally, I wanted to inspire the children to invest themselves in the site and watch how the environment developed as the trees grew..
I set up a free event open to all of the parents and children who attend my forest school sessions, or who have been interested in attending a session, but have not been able to make it so far.

It is an honour to have the chance to make a difference and plant a tree
If you would like to be part of this, now is your chance
I will have a free tree planting event around Christmas time...just bring a spade if you have one and your wellies...plus a dedication to someone you love ..either absent or otherwise..and food to share and lets have a tree blessing and setting forest school session"
I was thrilled with the overwhelming response, and at least 10 families attended the session on Sunday 22nd December. This was quite an impressive turnout given the excess rain fall experienced for the week before hand - with the rain holding off just for our tree session! I did say my thanks to the weather for that kind deed.
The access road to my site was flooded the day before the event, so a small trench was dug into the verge to help the water drain into the ditch. There was so much water flow from the road and surrounding fields we ended up with a lake on site. Thankfully it just missed where we had set out the tree support stakes - another blessing to be thankful for.
The children and parents took so much pleasure having their hands in the soil (or should I say mud), selecting the trees to be planted and taking time out of life to connect to nature and say their blessings to loved ones. The children, who of course tired easily of setting out trees - made the most of the muddy opportunity and spent much of their time splashing in giant puddles and making friends.
Adults and children a like benefited from the session - it was a huge therapy for them all - here is some of the feedback
".. Thank you . A has got so much more from this than you can imagine . Was emotional and he is very proud and pleased to have helped you guys and have the opportunity to do it in memory of his nan and grandad. ..... we appreciate you allowing A to be part of this "
"We had a lovely morning, thank you for the opportunity to squish around and plant trees on the solstice"
"I am so proud of L doing this and the fact that he has helped create something that will go on for hundreds of years (hopefully) he and everyone else that helped have left their mark in this world...thank you"
"In our family our main celebration is Yule so it was wonderful to take part on this special Solstice day. It was so fitting to give something back to our beautiful Earth and the Sun even came out as we all did so! 🌞 Thank you ask much for giving us the opportunity to do something meaningful to counterbalance the crazy consumerism that goes on around us 🌳💚🌳
We finished the session with ginger bread cookies (made with healthy ingredients) in the shape of Christmas trees - how else should you finish a community tree planting
Thank you so much for the trees - The varieties we selected will support the forest school activities in future years, along with nature and habitat in the mean time.
