When we set a goal (it does not just have to be at New Year) we are aiming to program our inner being. We will explore the simple common goal of “I want to lose weight”. But that issue is not necessarily made up of just one issue. There are potentially many little issues blocking you. Example issues could include “being made to clear your plate” as a child, thus over riding the instinct of “I am full”. It could be chocolate was always a gift when you were sad when little, and so now that is your comfort, or it could be a reward you were given for achieving.
Another area that could be stopping you is family history – you may have a family line of slow metabolisers. That does not mean it is impossible to lose weight, it just means you will have to eat right for your body type. It could be you are not convinced you can do it – if that is the case, pin notes everywhere – even in the biscuit tin. The act of writing the notes in a positive manner will help re-inforce your intention (and a reminder when you see them).
So let us flip that around, all of these issues are not obstacles, they are challenges, tests even, to see if you are serious about your desire to achieve. Did you really mean it when you said “I want to lose weight”, did you really want to do it, are you prepared to sacrifice your old ways for the inner you who has been there all this time, waiting to get out.
Challenges are life changing, and when you succeed they feel amazing, and likewise when you don’t, you are not too impressed with yourself. So when you set your goal, make sure it is achievable, or has bite size chunks that you can master without too much pain.
In my clinic I see (both via skype / phone and in person) a large number of clients who want to make life changes. In addition to health goals, I also work with personal goals such as “to change my career”, “succeeding on project x”, “breaking my addiction to diet coke”, “to overcome my anxiety with my professional examinations”.
