As a child, on Christmas Day, there would always be Christmas Crackers at the table at tea time when my grandparents arrived. We would enjoy getting in a pickle crossing arms so we all held on to the crackers at the same time and pulling them all at once with a loud bang. Then we would hunt for the little novelties that may have flown accross the floor in the magic of the moment.
With my sister and I having paper clips to hold our paper crowns miniaturised, we would then set to eat our evening Christmas meal of salad and cold meats whilst going round the table sharing riddles and jokes from the crackers.
Of course, many of the jokes are corny, but that is all part of the fun and familiarity.
